Local Veteran Support – North Carolina Update

This week, one of our team members brought forward an urgent situation involving a local Marine veteran, Dan, age 81. Dan, who is on VA disability, recently endured a devastating sequence of events — losing his home and his beloved dog, Delta Dawn, to arson.

Following a hospital stay earlier this year, Dan was placed under the care of a state-assigned caretaker. Unfortunately, that caretaker and her partner exploited his trust, ultimately destroying his home and leaving him without shelter. The caretaker is now in custody, but the damage to Dan’s property — and the emotional toll of losing Delta Dawn — has been profound.

Dan is determined to remain on his own land, where he currently lives in his truck. The county has committed to restoring his power once the site is cleared of debris. In the meantime, our team has mobilized quickly to address immediate needs and prepare the property for long-term recovery:

  • Debris Removal: We are coordinating with the local recycle center, which is donating a container for metal scrap. Burned materials will be removed using our dump trailer, with assistance from local contacts and heavy equipment for larger debris.

  • Shelter Solutions: God’s Pit Crew is working with us to explore options for Dan that can remain safely on his land while rebuilding begins. Other local partners are being contacted for potential housing solutions.

  • Site Readiness: Once cleanup is complete, the county will reconnect electricity, restoring a key utility needed for both safety and comfort.

Progress Tracker:

  • 🟢 Step 1 – Assessment & Planning: ✅ Completed

  • 🟢 Step 2 – Resource Coordination: ✅ Completed

  • 🟡 Step 3 – Debris Removal: In Progress (metal container on site, hauling underway)

  • 🔵 Step 4 – Shelter Secured: Pending (options being reviewed)

  • 🔵 Step 5 – Utilities Restored: Pending (to follow cleanup completion)

This case is a sobering reminder of the unexpected challenges faced by many in our communities — even those who have served our country. Naone’s priority is to ensure Dan has safe shelter, functioning utilities, and a foundation for recovery before our next deployment to Texas.

We will continue to provide updates as progress is made and as the cleanup operation moves forward.
